After the Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings’ match on Wednesday night, the changes in the Orange and Purple Cap standings have heated up. As the league approaches the final stage, the race for the Orange and Purple caps is consistently changing, with bowlers stepping up at zero hour and batters striking hard to pull off the game.
The Race for the Purple Cap 2025
Noor Ahmad owned, not long ago, the Purple Cap and picked one wicket against PBKS, and Khaleel Ahmed picked two. These performances kept Noor third in the table with 15 wickets, behind only Josh Hazlewood of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Prasidh Krishna of Gujarat Titans (GT), who now have 18 and 17 wickets respectively. Below Noor is Khaleel, on 14 wickets like Mitchell Starc of Delhi Capitals (DC), but with a better average and economy.
Below them, it is all a bit crowded. Yuzvendra Chahal picked up four wickets against CSK, including a hat-trick, which moved his runs to 13 and has him jump ahead of a lot of bowlers to tie at sixth with Harshal Patel of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Arshdeep Singh (PBKS), Krunal Pandya (RCB), Varun Chakravarthy of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and MI’s Trent Boult.

The Competition for the Orange Cap 2025
Tonight in the RR vs MI match in Ahmedabad, we will see Suryakumar Yadav (No. 3) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (No. 4) in the race for the Orange Cap battle each other. Just a reminder here that they are respectively only 29 and 30 runs short of the current Orange Cap holder, B Sai Sudharsan. By the end of Thursday, that cap could potentially be returned to Suryakumar or alternatively may end up on Jaiswal’s head.
Virat Kohli, who is second in the list of highest run-getters in IPL 2025, with Jos Buttler (GT) and Nicholas Pooran of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), are other notable contenders for the Orange Cap.
Shreyas Iyer is at No. 10 with 360 runs, and with his score of 72 against CSK the other night, it has hopefully given him a little confidence boost after a rough patch of low scores.
